Key aspects of a point-based system include:

Criteria: The system typically assigns points to applicants based on predetermined criteria deemed important for successful integration into the country’s labor market and society. Common criteria include educational qualifications, professional experience in specific occupations, language proficiency in the country’s official languages, age, adaptability factors, and sometimes job offers or sponsorship from employers.
Points allocation: Applicants accumulate points based on their qualifications and attributes. Higher scores increase the likelihood of receiving an invitation to apply for immigration or permanent residency. The allocation of points varies among countries and may be periodically reviewed or adjusted based on changing immigration priorities and labor market demands.
Expression of Interest (EOI) or application process: Applicants interested in immigrating through a point-based system typically submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) or a formal application to the immigration authority of the country. They provide details about their qualifications, work experience, language proficiency, and other relevant information, which are then assessed to determine their eligibility and points score.
Selection process: Based on the points scored, applicants may be ranked against each other in a pool or database. Periodically, the immigration authority may issue invitations to apply for immigration or permanent residency to candidates with the highest scores, subject to available quotas and program requirements.
Invitation to apply: Candidates who receive invitations to apply are typically required to submit a formal application for immigration or permanent residency within a specified timeframe. They must provide supporting documentation to verify the information provided in their EOI or application, undergo background checks, and meet other eligibility criteria.
Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS): Some countries, such as Canada, use a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to manage their point-based immigration programs. The CRS assigns points to candidates based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and other additional factors, with the highest-ranking candidates receiving invitations to apply for permanent residency.
