Portugal D7 Visa Update: New Income Requirements

Portugal D7 visa income requirements

Portugal raised its minimum wage for 2026, and the Portugal D7 visa income requirements went up with it. If you plan to apply this year, last year’s numbers won’t work.

The D7, which is often called the Portugal passive income visa. Its income benchmark follows the national minimum wage.

That wage is now €920 a month. In 2025, it was €870. So the D7 visa minimum income for a single applicant has moved from €10,440 to €11,040 a year, which is €50 more.

What Counts as Passive Income

Passive income is money that arrives without you working for it daily. Some examples: pensions, rent from a property you own, dividends, royalties, or interest on savings and investments.

Your salary won't be counted because you are actively spending time and working for it. That includes remote work, freelancing, and income from a business you run. If that’s how you mainly earn your money, then the D7 isn’t the right visa for you, and you may want to look at a different route.

Proving Your Income

You have to reveal your income to the authorities.

Authorities want to see that your money arrives regularly and that it’s yours. Bank statements showing the payments are the usual starting point. Add whatever backs up the source: a pension certificate, a lease agreement, dividend statements, or tax returns. The details on these documents should match the details on your account.

Unclear or inconsistent income is a common reason for delays and refusals.

If your income is inconsistent and unclear, then it can cause delays, which is one of the common reasons. So avoid these mistakes.

Other Portugal D7 Visa Requirements

Below are the requirements for D7 eligibility:

  • Clean criminal record certificate,
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal,
  • You’ll need a Portuguese tax number (NIF),
  • Health and travel insurance,
  • Passport and a local bank account

Many applicants are also asked to show savings.

Portugal D7 Visa for Indians

The D7 is open to non-EU nationals, so Indian citizens can apply, and the income figures above apply to you as they do to anyone else.

The paperwork is where Indian applicants often lose time. Certificates may need to be apostilled and translated before you submit them. That takes longer than most people expect.

The D7 doesn’t suit part-time stays because it expects you to actually live in Portugal, and the visa alone doesn’t give you the right to work.

The Portugal D7 Visa Application Process

First, you get a Portuguese tax number, then open a bank account and arrange housing. After that, you submit your D7 visa application. Once the visa is approved, you travel to Portugal and apply for your residence permit.

Most applicants follow the same order. How long this takes depends on your documents and on appointment availability.

Is the D7 Right for You?

The D7 works best for people with steady passive income who want to live in Portugal for the long term. Some examples are retirees, investors, and property owners.

If most of your income comes from a job or a business, then probably this isn’t the right visa. The same goes if you want a route that needs very little time in Portugal. Other options exist, and it’s better to find that out before you pay for an application.

Your Next Steps

Start by adding up your passive income, including anyone who will join you. Compare it with the 2026 figures above. Then check that your documents show that income clearly.
If anything is uncertain, talk to an expert before you submit. The thing is, no visa outcome can be promised, and your own situation decides.
