Ireland Visa Decisions Today: Interview Process, Status Checks and Processing Times

 Ireland visa decisions

If you've seen posts saying Ireland now requires a face-to-face visa interview for every applicant, you're not alone. The claim is spreading fast. It isn't accurate.

Here's what actually applies to Indian applicants, how to check your visa decision status, and what to expect on timelines.

Is There a New Ireland Visa Interview Rule?

No. The Irish Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), the Department of Justice and the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi have not introduced a universal interview requirement. Most applications are still assessed on documents, submitted through the AVATS online system and the VFS Global Visa Application Centre.

So where does the confusion come from? Usually from three things that get mixed up.

1. Telephone credibility checks

If a visa officer can't approve an application on the documents alone, the Embassy may call the applicant or their sponsor. This usually happens when there are financial gaps or inconsistencies in the file. The call is unannounced. It isn't a scheduled interview, and it doesn't happen for every applicant.

The Embassy says these calls come from its official line, 011 49403200. If nobody answers and the questions stay unresolved, the file moves to further review. That can end in a refusal.

2. Biometrics at VFS

From 30 June 2025, Indian residents applying for a long-stay D study visa must give fingerprints and a photograph in person at a VFS Global centre. This is identity verification. It is not an interview, though many agency posts describe it that way.

3. Changes to short-stay appeals

From 1 June 2026, the right to appeal a refused short-stay C visa (tourist, business and short course) was removed. If a C visa is refused, you need to make a fresh application. Appeals are still available for long-stay D visas.

What Is Fact and What Is Rumour?

How to Check Ireland Visa Decisions Today

Applications from India are decided by the New Delhi Visa Office. It publishes a list of decisions on the Embassy of Ireland website on working days, usually by around 11:00 AM IST. Applications sent to Dublin for central processing appear on the ISD website, which is updated weekly on Tuesdays.

To check your visa decision status:

  1. Find your 8-digit AVATS transaction number on your printed application summary sheet.
  2. Open the visa decisions page on the Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi website.
  3. Download the latest decision spreadsheet.
  4. Search for your number (Ctrl + F).
  5. Read the outcome next to it.

If your number is on the list as Approved, your passport is sent to VFS for the visa to be endorsed, then couriered to you. If it says Refused, a refusal letter explaining the grounds comes with your passport.

If your number isn't on the list, your file is still being assessed. That's normal. It doesn't mean something has gone wrong.

VFS Ireland Visa Tracking: What It Shows (and What It Doesn't)

VFS Global is a service provider. Its staff don't assess applications, and they can't see how far your file has progressed inside the Embassy.

Tracking follows the physical movement of your documents:

  • Application received at the VFS centre
  • Submitted to the Embassy in New Delhi
  • Under assessment at the Embassy
  • Decision received at VFS
  • Passport dispatched by courier

Once your file reaches the Embassy, the tracker doesn't tell you much. The status may sit on "under assessment" for weeks. To track it, you'll need your AVATS number, last name and date of birth, or the reference number on your VFS receipt.

The Embassy has also said it won't reply to individual status queries while a file is within the published processing time. So check the decision list first, and wait before you write in.

Ireland Visa Processing Time From India

Published timelines are counted in working days from the date your documents reach the Embassy. They don't start from your VFS appointment date

Figures reflect the Embassy and ISD pages as updated in September 2026. Timelines change, so confirm them on the official pages before you plan travel.

What can slow an application down

  • Biometric delays: Technical issues or data mismatches can mean a re-scan.
  • Manual financial checks: Bank statements, employment records and tax filings take longer to verify if they can't be checked digitally, for example documents not issued through DigiLocker.
  • Telephone assessments: Processing pauses until the officer reaches you or your sponsor.
  • Peak season: Study applications bunch up between May and August, ahead of the autumn intake.

Common Reasons for Delay or Refusal

Most problems come from the documents, not the process. Officers commonly flag:

  • Unexplained lump-sum deposits: Large deposits made shortly before you apply, with no proof of where the money came from.
  • Funds that aren't accessible: Fixed deposits or mutual funds need a bank letter confirming the money is liquid and can be withdrawn.
  • Contacts that can't be verified: Employer or academic letters without a landline number, postal address or official email domain.
  • Weak ties to India: If you can't show economic, employment or family ties, the officer may not be satisfied you'll leave before your visa expires.
  • Early flight bookings: Booking non-refundable tickets before a decision doesn't speed anything up, and the Department of Justice advises against it.

For long-stay study visas, the Embassy applies set financial thresholds: €10,000 for living costs and a minimum €6,000 upfront tuition payment. Always check the latest figures with your institution and the official page.

What to Do If Your Visa Is Refused

The route depends on the visa type.

  • Short-stay C visa: No appeal. You'll need to submit a new application with the full fee and stronger supporting evidence.
  • Long-stay D visa: You can appeal in writing to the New Delhi Visa Office within two calendar months of the date on the refusal letter. Address each refusal ground with documents. There is no fee.

Before you appeal or reapply, read the refusal letter closely. It lists the exact grounds, and those tell you what to fix.
