France Work Visa from India

With a job offer in France, you need two things before you can start work: a work authorisation and a long-stay visa. Your employer handles the first. You handle the second. Most confusion about the France Work Visa comes from mixing them up.

This guide covers the 2026 process for Indian professionals. No consultancy can guarantee a visa, because the decision rests with the French authorities. What you can do is understand each stage and avoid the mistakes that cause delays.

France Work Permit Visa: Two Separate Stages

  • Work authorisation (autorisation de travail): Confirms your contract meets French labour rules. Your employer applies online, and the regional authority (DREETS) reviews it.
  • Long-stay visa (VLS-TS): Lets you enter France and live there for your first 12 months. You apply through the French Embassy or a Consulate General in India.

The work authorisation comes first. Talent Passport applicants are the exception. They skip it and apply for the visa directly.

Which France Work Visa Fits You?

The SMIC is France's minimum wage. From 1 June 2026, it is €12.31 gross per hour, or €1,867.02 gross per month.

If you hold a bachelor's degree and about three years of experience, note two things. Salarié Qualifié usually expects a Master's-level degree or around five years of comparable experience. The EU Blue Card needs a degree of at least three years, or five years of experience, plus the €59,373 salary. Thresholds change, so confirm them on Service-Public.fr before choosing a route.

Standard Salarié roles also need a labour market test. The employer advertises the job on France Travail for three weeks, unless it is on the shortage occupation list (métiers en tension).

France Work Visa Application Process

Step 1: Your Employer Applies for Work Authorisation

  1. You both sign a contract with the title, duties, location, and salary.
  2. The employer completes the labour market test, if required.
  3. The employer submits the request online.
  4. DREETS reviews the company's tax standing, the salary, and the role.
  5. Once approved, the authorisation is sent to the visa system.

Step 2: You Apply in India

  • Register at france-visas.gouv.fr and complete the long-stay visa form.
  • Book an appointment at a VFS Global centre in India.
  • Submit your documents, give biometrics, and pay the fees.
  • The consulate reviews your file against the work authorisation.
  • Collect your passport with the VLS-TS sticker.

Step 3: After You Arrive

Validate your visa on the ANEF portal within three months. Pay the residence tax during validation. The amount depends on your visa type and changed in 2026, so check the current figure. Attend an OFII appointment if called. Apply for your multi-year residence card at least two months before the VLS-TS expires.

Documents You Need

From you:

  • Passport valid for three months beyond your visa period, with two blank pages
  • France-Visas form and receipt, plus two biometric photos
  • Work authorisation copy (or signed contract for Talent categories)
  • Degree certificates, CV, experience letters, and payslips
  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Proof of accommodation for the first month

From your employer: company registration extract (Kbis), URSSAF compliance certificate, job description, and proof of the France Travail advert where required.

Legalising Indian documents: This is where many files slow down. Degrees need state HRD attestation, then an MEA Apostille, then a sworn French translation (traducteur assermenté). Police clearance and civil certificates need the Apostille and translation too. Start early. It can take longer than the visa.

France Work Permit Processing Time

These are typical ranges, not promises.

Talent Passport applicants often wait less. June to September is busy at Indian visa centres. Missing Apostilles, mismatched job titles, and employer tax issues cause most delays.

Family and Long-Term Residence

Talent Passport holders' spouses and children receive Talent – Famille permits, and the spouse can work. Standard Salarié holders usually bring family later through family reunification, after about 18 months. After five years of continuous legal residence, you may apply for a 10-year resident card or naturalisation, subject to current language and integration rules.

Conclusion

The France Work Visa has two stages. Your employer secures the work authorisation, and you apply for the visa in India. Confirm your category, check your salary against the 2026 thresholds, and start legalising documents early.
