Medicine Abroad

More and more students are seriously considering studying Medicine abroad. Some view it as an alternative if they don’t get an offer to study Medicine in the UK. But an increasing number now consider studying Medicine in Europe their first choice.

There is a real hunger among students, parents and teachers to learn more about the options for studying Medicine in Europe: how it works, how much it costs, how you can transition back to the UK and the options for practicing overseas.

Why Should I Consider Studying Medicine Abroad?

The number of applications for places on UK medical programs far outstrips the number of places available. This places UK admissions teams, schools and students in a very difficult position.

Many aspiring doctors feel they are able to apply to Medical Schools in the UK. And a lot of those that do apply miss out on a place.

Studying an alternative degree, such as Biomedical Sciences, has been seen as the logical alternative, giving the student the chance to make another application to Medical School later, with a more developed academic profile.

There is, however, still no guarantee of a place, and not many students choose to spend £27,000 in tuition fees for a degree that is not their first choice.

Now, hundreds of aspiring doctors are looking to Europe to complete their medical training. And many report that the education and facilities are of an impressive standard. Plus the tuition fees and living costs are lower.

Are European Medical Courses Taught In English?

With English being the international language of education and research, more and more overseas universities are teaching their Medicine programs in English.

This gives students from all over the world greater access to the benefits offered by what are often highly regarded and respected universities.

Can I Practice In The UK After Studying Medicine Abroad?

Many European universities have a long history of medical education and are at the forefront of research, with graduates working in medical posts around the world.

British graduates from a Medicine program in the European Economic Area are eligible to apply for General Medical Council registration in the UK without sitting the PLAB exam.

Is Studying Medicine Abroad Right For Me?

Studying Medicine abroad is a good option for some, but won’t be right for everyone. It should not be considered an ‘easy’ option.

You will be signing up to studying a challenging degree in another country for six years of your life. You will also be learning the language of the country you are studying in, because, while your studies and exams are in English, you will be communicating with patients in their native language.

You will have to finance your studies and living costs with limited access to student finance, although studying Medicine in Europe does tend to be much cheaper than doing so in the UK.

Studying Medicine in the USA

Thinking of studying Medicine in the USA? Unlike in the UK, studying Medicine in the USA is only available as a postgraduate option, so you can start a Medicine program after you complete a four-year pre-med degree in a subject like Biology, Chemistry or Neuroscience. This degree will then prepare you for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), which is required to get into medical school.

Where can I study Medicine in the USA?

There are 172 medical schools in the USA which offer either a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree – so there’s a lot to choose from if you’re thinking of studying Medicine in the USA!

What are the entry requirements for studying Medicine in the USA?

Requirements differ between different medical schools, so it’s best to double check these with the school themselves if you’re unsure. All US medical schools, however, require the completion of a four-year pre-med undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and require you to demonstrate your scientific knowledge in areas of Biology, general Chemistry and organic Chemistry. For this reason, many students choose to take undergraduate Biology or Chemistry programs (and this also helps with your MCAT!).

For example, the University of California requires that during their Medicine candidates study general Chemistry for one year with laboratory, organic Chemistry for a minimum of two quarters, Physics for one year with laboratory and General Biology for a minimum of one year with laboratory, including the study of vertebrae zoology. They also state that students who chose to major in the Humanities or Social Sciences are also expected to take these science courses.

A good MCAT score is also a very important requirement for studying Medicine in the USA as it determines your acceptance into a good university. The MCAT tests your ability to think critically and your scientific knowledge, so it’s crucial you put in lots of effort to revise. You should take this test the year before you intend to start studying Medicine – so make sure you register for your MCAT on time!

How do I apply to study Medicine in the USA?

To apply for most medical schools in the US, you’ll apply using the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) – but if you’re applying to the MD program at Texas University, you’ll need to apply using the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS).

AMCAS will deliver your application (including details of your work experience, coursework transcripts and extra-curricular activities) and MCAT score to your medical schools of choice. Some medical schools also ask for additional material in the form of essays or letters of recommendation. This is known as a secondary application, and there may be an extra fee for this.

The AMCAS fee to apply to one medical school is $160 – and it costs an additional $38 to add extra schools to your application. The Fee Assistance program is available to help students in financial need with these fees, as well as with MCAT fees. Generally speaking, applications open in the first week of May and stay open until submission closes in June make sure you keep an eye on the exact deadline so you don’t miss it!

While these details will be sent by CAO, don’t forget that you’ll still need to register with SUSI and fill in an online application form to apply for this grant to help with your studies.

Medical Universities in Europe include some of the best medical schools in the world and offer top-rate medical education and training. The European medical universities we work with, for instance, have centuries of prestigious legacy and have produced some of the leading physicians and doctors in the world today.

Unfortunately, European medical schools are sometimes perceived as mediocre or “not up to par” with medical schools in the US and Canada. However this is a misconception. Medical programs in Europe meet the highest standards of modern medicine and many doctors, who studied in Europe, practice in the United States, UK and Canada.

Why study medicine abroad?

In an article published by the New York Times about medical studies abroad, “The number of foreign university students in Hungary rose 21 percent from 2005 to 2011 to 16,465 from 13,601” (August, 2013).  It seems that many realize that studying medicine in North America is unnecessarily expensive, includes a much more tedious and competitive admissions process and are therefore examining options to study medicine abroad.

Medical School in the US is plainly a fortune. However, medical schools in Europe are considerably cheaper. The cost of a medical degree in the US ranges at $140-240,000 over 4 years. Medical Schools in Europe, however, are almost a third of that, with tuition fees spanning between $60-90,000 over 6 years.

Medical School Admission Requirements & application

Applying to Medical schools in the US and Canada can be a tedious and unforgiving process. There are many requirements for even just applying to med school in North America such as an undergraduate degree, the MCAT’s, 2 years of prerequisite courses. Often this is incorrectly perceived as a product of prestige and demand, though the truth is that medical schools are a business and the difficult med school requirements aren’t necessarily linked to the level of studies. Medical Schools in Europe, however, only require a high school diploma and to pass a written and oral entrance exam in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy etc.

Degree Duration

Many who are interested in studying medicine abroad are concerned with the fact that a medical degree in Europe takes 6 years where as in the US it only takes 4 years. But this is again a bit misconstrued. First, American medical schools require a graduate degree which takes 4 years (making it a 8-10 year degree acquisition process) whereas in Europe one could apply to medical school right after high school. Second, some medical schools in Europe offer a 4 year program for international students who hold a bachelor’s degree.

Travel

One of the greatest reasons to study abroad is expanding your horizons and seeing the world! Why not gain a world-accredited medical degree while living in the gorgeous romantic cities of Europe, such as Rome or Prague? International studies offer a unique opportunity to travel and expose yourself to new and incredible experiences.

So if you’re looking for a medical career, to become a doctor, a dentist or a veterinarian, you should consider the option to study medicine abroad in English. The European medical programs we work with and many more, are a real and viable option and even are plainly a better and even only option for many.
