University Selection

When choosing a university, there are many things to consider – location, what programs they offer (and if any of those programs align especially well with your interests and goals), campus culture, etc. All these factors will help you narrow your list of prospective schools and give you somewhere to start looking. Use the internet! Look at university websites or search through massive college search engines or rankings.

Make sure you qualify for admission at the universities on your list. This includes checking if you meet their GPA standards, any requirements for standardized test scores (and whether or not they’ll accept the tests from your high school as fulfillment of this requirement), etc. Also make sure to see how many semesters vs. quarters a university uses and its calendar so that you can study abroad if that’s one of your life goals!

Many universities have their own study abroad programs with specific courses and cultural exposure. Do your research on the university websites, look up any events happening in your area they might be attending like university fairs and information sessions where the universities come to talk about their program and answer any questions you might have. Attending these types of events allows you to begin networking at the universities.

Talk to your academic adviser or a head of department for your major if you don’t know what schools offer certain classes that are required in your major. They can point you in better directions because how else would I know Sheffield Hallam University existed?

See if there might be any alumni from your high school (if they still live in the area) or anything like that who studied abroad through their university and ask them questions as well! Once you gain all of this information decide which ever one is more comparable with what classes you need to take/electives for things regarding minor/major/classes offered during fall/ spring semester/ etc.
